Base Oil Guide

This guide explains the commercial categories buyers commonly encounter when evaluating base oils. Final selection must be based on the current product documents, additive system, finished-lubricant target and laboratory validation.

Base Oil Groups

Group I

Solvent-refined mineral base oils commonly evaluated where viscosity, solvency and finished-product economics must be balanced.

Group II

Hydroprocessed mineral base oils commonly evaluated for improved saturation and oxidation-performance requirements.

Group III

Higher-refined mineral base oils used in suitable formulations after grade and performance verification.

Group IV PAO

Synthetic polyalphaolefin base stocks available in multiple viscosity grades for appropriate formulation work.

Group V Esters

Other synthetic base stocks, including ester families, evaluated for specific formulation functions and compatibility.

Bright Stock

High-viscosity base stock evaluated for suitable heavy-lubricant and grease applications, subject to current data.

How Buyers Compare Grades

  • Viscosity and viscosity index
  • Flash point, pour point and volatility where relevant
  • Solvency, oxidation-performance tendency and additive response
  • Finished-lubricant target and laboratory test program
  • Current TDS, SDS and batch COA
  • Packaging, quantity, destination and trade term
