FOB, CFR and CIF base oil quotations are comparable only after the buyer normalizes the named port, Incoterms version, product, packaging, quantity basis, document scope and exclusions. Incoterms rules allocate defined delivery, risk, cost and document responsibilities; they do not replace the sale contract or define the product specification.
Read the complete trade term
Record the three-letter rule, the precise named port or point and the stated rules version. Under a shipment rule, the seller may arrange transport beyond the point where delivery and risk transfer occur, so “freight included” must not be mistaken for “seller carries every destination risk.” Confirm the final allocation in the contract and current ICC rules.
Normalize the commercial line items
- Same product identity and accepted technical basis.
- Same quantity and packaging basis.
- Same origin and destination points.
- Included main carriage, insurance where applicable, export handling and documents.
- Excluded destination handling, import clearance, duties, taxes, storage, demurrage and local delivery.
- Quotation validity, payment basis and change mechanism.
Use the Price Center for current-price intent, not as a substitute for a dated offer.
Check FOB, CFR and CIF questions separately
For FOB, identify who nominates the vessel and what loading evidence is supplied. For CFR, confirm the destination port and carriage scope while keeping risk transfer distinct from freight payment. For CIF, confirm the insurance evidence, coverage basis, insured party and claims route. The Global Shipping page remains the service owner; this article is a comparison method.
Build a comparison sheet before selection
Place each cost and responsibility in one column, mark unknowns, and ask for a revised quotation rather than estimating hidden items. Continue with the landed-cost guide and destination-port checklist (Coming later). Review supply through Group II, Group III or Bulk Supply.

Request a normalized destination quotation
Provide the grade, packaging, destination port and requested term. Current freight and commercial scope will be quoted for the enquiry.
